EDITORS COMMENTS
In this satirical illustration from a German magazine dated December 9, 1908, Emperor William II of Germany is depicted being discovered in a jam closet by the personification of Germany, Germania. With a mischievous grin on his face and his hand buried in a jar labeled "Buttinkeit Jam," the Emperor appears to have help himself to a forbidden preserve. The shelves of the jam closet are filled with other jars of preserves, each labeled with political undertones: "Imperial Assumption Jelly," "Meinsel Und Gott Preserve," "Divine Right Jam," and "Absolutism Jelly." The use of food as a metaphor for political power and the Emperor's audacious act of taking what isn't his serve as a commentary on the imperial regime's perceived arrogance and entitlement. This humorous cartoon, published in a magazine, offers a glimpse into the political climate of Germany at the turn of the 20th century.
