EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this image of the Giant Ferris Wheel at Earls Court, London, circa 1900. This engineering marvel, a precursor to modern amusement park rides, began construction in March 1894 and opened its doors to the public in July 1895. Boasting a colossal diameter of 300ft and weighing an impressive 1,100 tons, the wheel's complete revolution took around twenty minutes. Despite its grandeur, the Ferris Wheel's operation was not without incident. In May 1896, passengers were left stranded for an agonizing four and a half hours when the wheel came to a halt. However, this setback did not deter the public's fascination with the attraction, which continued to draw crowds until its demise in 1906-7. The Giant Ferris Wheel at Earls Court was a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of its creators, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in engineering and entertainment. Although no longer in existence, its legacy lives on as a significant chapter in the history of amusement park rides.
