EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, four-time Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone is seen waving goodbye to the adoring crowd at West Calder during his Midlothian Campaign tour in 1880. The elderly statesman, who had retired from politics, was coaxed back into public life by the Marquess of Rosebery to contest the ultra-Tory seat in a US-style campaign. Gladstone's tour of Midlothian was a highly publicised event, with the media reporting on the massive crowds that gathered to catch a glimpse of the popular politician. In this scene, Gladstone is shown departing from West Calder on a Pullman train, which allowed him to address the crowds from its platform. Throngs of people are seen waving and cheering, their faces filled with excitement and admiration. The streets of West Cald were decorated with garlands and banners, including one that reads "Proud to See You." The station building is also adorned with a banner welcoming Gladstone. The photograph captures the sense of excitement and anticipation that surrounded the campaign, as well as the enduring popularity of Gladstone among the people. The Midlothian Campaign was a turning point in British political history, marking the beginning of the Liberal Party's resurgence and paving the way for Gladstone's third term as Prime Minister. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the power of politics to bring people together and inspire hope and change.
