EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when the former German cruiser SMS Goeben, renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim and adopted as the flagship of the Ottoman Navy, was held in isolation off the shores of Buyukada, the largest of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara. The image dates back to 1923, during the tumultuous 1920s when the Ottoman Empire was disintegrating and the Turkish National Movement, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was fighting for the establishment of a modern, secular Turkish state. The SMS Goeben, a powerful German warship, had entered the Black Sea in 1914, sparking tensions between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers. After the end of World War I, the Goeben was interned in the neutral port of Constantinople (Istanbul). In August 1918, the ship was transferred to the Ottoman Navy under the new name Yavuz Sultan Selim. The Ottoman Navy, weakened by the war, saw the addition of this formidable vessel as a significant boost to its forces. However, the Allied Powers, who had long sought to dismantle the Ottoman Empire, were not pleased with this development. In 1922, the Goeben was immobilized off the coast of Buyukada, effectively imprisoned, as part of the efforts to prevent the Ottoman Navy from posing a threat to the Allied forces. The photograph presents a striking contrast between the majestic Yavuz Sultan Selim, anchored in the tranquil waters, and the barren, rocky landscape of Buyukada, underscoring the complex political dynamics of the time. This image is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role the SMS Goeben played in the twilight of the Ottoman Empire and the dawn of the Turkish Republic. The photograph, taken in 1923, is a testament to the rich history and the enduring legacy of the Ottoman Navy and the Turkish military.
