EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume as worn by a member of the Grant clan. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 1," published in 1923, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of Scotland's Highland clans. The Grant clan, one of the oldest and most distinguished clans in Scotland, is represented here by a proud and noble figure dressed in full regalia. The tartan plaid, with its distinctive black, green, and yellow colors, is draped over the shoulders and secured with a brooch known as a "kilt pin." The man wears a white linen shirt, or "waistcoat," beneath the plaid, and a pair of black hose, or stockings, held up by garters. A sgian-dubh, or black knife, is tucked into his right sock. The Grant clan's bonnet, or "feilidh mhor," is a tall, cylindrical hat adorned with a feather and a tassel. The hat is secured with a leather strap under the chin, and the feather is often that of a cock's comb or a rooster's tail. The man also wears a sporran, or leather pouch, suspended from his waist by a belt, or "belted plaid." The sporran holds various essentials, including a small knife, a pipe, and tobacco. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Scotland's Highland clans and their unique traditions. It invites us to appreciate the beauty and richness of Scotland's cultural heritage and to celebrate the resilience and pride of its people.
