Colonels Charles Hamilton Smith and Sir William Jardine created this illustration for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Dogs, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1839. The Great Plains wolf, also known as the buffalo wolf, was once a common sight on the vast grasslands of the Great Plains. However, due to habitat loss, hunting, and disease, their population declined significantly, leading to their classification as a threatened species.
