EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving on steel, titled "Great Plains Wolf or Buffalo Wolf," depicts the Canis lupus nubilus, a subspecies of gray wolf native to the Great Plains of North America. Colonels Charles Hamilton Smith and Sir William Jardine created this illustration for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Dogs, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1839. The Great Plains wolf, also known as the buffalo wolf, was once a common sight on the vast grasslands of the Great Plains. However, due to habitat loss, hunting, and disease, their population declined significantly, leading to their classification as a threatened species. The image captures the wolf in its natural habitat, surrounded by the rolling plains and buffalo herds. The wolf's piercing eyes and sharp teeth convey its predatory nature, while its thick, shaggy coat and bushy tail are characteristic of the subspecies. The engraving process involved creating a drawing, which was then etched onto a steel plate, and finally hand-colored to add detail and depth. The intricate details of the wolf's fur, muscles, and facial features are a testament to the skill of the engraver and the artist. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect and preserve the Great Plains wolf population. This historical illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it.
