1811 1872 Befriended Greeley Horace Journalist Noted Rapping Sisters Urging Buttre

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Horace Greeley, an American journalistic icon, in the later years of his life. Born on February 3, 1811, in Amherst, New Hampshire, Greeley rose to prominence as a journalist, editor, and publisher. He is most famously known for his editorial in the New-York Tribune, urging young men to head west and settle the wild lands of America, coining the phrase "Go West, Young Man." Greeley's influence extended beyond his journalistic pursuits. He was an ardent abolitionist and a vocal supporter of women's suffrage. Intriguingly, Greeley also befriended the Fox sisters, Leah and Margaret, who claimed to communicate with spirits through rapping noises. Greeley, a skeptic by nature, was fascinated by their phenomena and even wrote about it in his newspaper. Despite his many accomplishments, Greeley faced personal challenges. He was a devoted husband and father, but his marriage was marred by financial difficulties and the tragic death of his daughter. Greeley's health began to decline in the late 1860s, and he passed away on November 29, 1872, at the age of 61. This photograph, taken during the latter part of his life, reveals a man with a thoughtful and introspective expression. His piercing gaze and well-groomed appearance convey a sense of determination and intelligence. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Horace Greeley's significant contributions to American journalism and his enduring legacy as a trailblazer and innovator.
