This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an enchanting collection of hares and rabbits. First, we encounter the Mountain Hare, Lepus timidus, with its distinctive white winter coat and brown summer fur. Next, the mythical Jackalope or Horned Hare, Lepus temperamentalus, adds a touch of fantasy with its elongated ears and antler-like appendages. The Northern White Hare, Lepus timidus, is depicted in its pristine white winter attire, while the Snowshoe Hare, Lepus americanus, is shown with its large hind feet, perfect for navigating through deep snow.
