1777 1837 Albans Banker Coutts Duchess Married Mellon Ninth Previously Harriot

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Harriot Mellon, later known as the Duchess of St Albans (1777-1837), at the height of her beauty and elegance. Born into a wealthy English family, Harriot's early life was marked by privilege and opportunity. She first gained notice as an accomplished actress on the London stage, gracing the theaters of Drury Lane and Covent Garden with her talent and charisma. However, Harriot's life took an unexpected turn when she married Thomas Coutts, a prominent banker, in 1804. Their union brought her even greater wealth and status, but it was short-lived; Thomas passed away just five years later. In 1816, Harriot married again, this time to the ninth Duke of St Albans, William Petty-FitzMaurice. The duke was known for his extravagance and scandalous behavior, but Harriot remained devoted to him until his death in 1833. This portrait, created around the time of Harriot's first marriage, showcases her striking features and refined style. Her elegant gown, adorned with intricate lace and a delicate floral headdress, highlights her grace and sophistication. The subtle expression on her face suggests a woman of depth and intelligence, one who has faced challenges and emerged stronger for it. Harriot's life was marked by both triumph and tragedy, but she remained a force to be reckoned with, leaving a lasting impact on English society as an actress, a duchess, and a woman of great fortune and determination.
