EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures a heavy artillery convoy making its way through a muddy terrain during the First World War. The photograph was taken by renowned French artist and war correspondent Georges Scott in the early 1900s. Scott began his career in the 1890s and worked as a war correspondent for the prestigious news magazine L'Illustration during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. When war broke out in 1914, Scott joined the French Army and was able to continue his work as an artist and illustrator for the same publication, producing many now famous works dealing with the Great War. In this print, we see the raw power and determination of the military machine as horses and trucks laden with artillery pieces navigate the challenging terrain. The heavy rain and mud add to the sense of urgency and the harsh realities of war. Scott's masterful use of light and shadow, as well as his ability to capture the grit and grime of the battlefield, make this a truly iconic image in military history.
