EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 192: Heliodoxa imperatrix, or Empress Brilliant, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored lithograph by John and Elizabeth Gould from John Gould's A Monograph of the Trochilid, or Family of Hummingbirds, Volume 4 (1849-61). This exquisite illustration showcases the anatomy and vibrant plumage of this remarkable bird, a member of the Apodiformes order and the Angiospermae family. The Empress Brilliant, also known as the Green-throated Heliodoxa, is a small hummingbird native to South America. With iridescent green and brown feathers adorning its body, this bird is a sight to behold. Its long, curved bill is perfectly suited for extracting nectar from the flowers of angiosperms, or flowering plants. In this illustration, we see several Empress Brilliants hovering above a flock of flowers, their bills poised to feed. The intricate details of their feathers and anatomy are beautifully rendered, with each iridescent hue shimmering in the light. The delicate petals of the flowers are also expertly illustrated, adding to the overall beauty of the scene. The 19th century was a time of great interest in the natural world, and works like Gould's Monograph of the Trochilid family were instrumental in documenting and preserving the natural history of hummingbirds and other avian species. This illustration is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Goulds and the importance of natural history in the 19th century.
