Henri IV Enters Paris: A Pivotal Moment in French History (March 1594) This evocative image captures the historic moment when Henri of Navarre, later to be known as Henri IV, triumphantly enters Paris after converting to Catholicism. The year was 1594, and Paris, the capital city of France, had long been a stronghold of Catholic resistance against the Protestant king. Henri, born into the House of Bourbon, had ascended to the throne of Navarre in 1572 but faced significant challenges to his claim to the French crown. His Protestant faith made him an unacceptable ruler for many in the predominantly Catholic population. Despite numerous military campaigns, he was unable to take Paris and secure his position. Faced with this stalemate, Henri made a bold decision. In order to unite the country and claim the French throne, he would convert to Catholicism. On March 13, 1594, Henri took the sacrament at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Chartres, marking his conversion. Three days later, he entered Paris, welcomed by the city's residents with open arms. This event, known as the "Marche au Sel," or the "Salt March," was a turning point in French history. Henri's successful entry into Paris marked the end of the Wars of Religion and paved the way for the Bourbon dynasty's long reign over France. The image of Henri IV riding through the city gates, surrounded by his troops and citizens, symbolizes the power of religious unity and the triumph of diplomacy over conflict. This print, from the extensive archives of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a captivating glimpse into a pivotal moment in French history. The intricate details of the image, from the ornate armor of the soldiers to the architectural features of the city gates, transport us back to the 16th century and allow us to witness the historic event firsthand.
