EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on wood print depicts King Henry IV of France (1553-1610) leading his troops into battle against the Spanish and Catholic League forces on March 14, 1590, in the historic Battle of Ivry. The Wars of Religion had been raging in France for over three decades, pitting the Huguenot Protestants against the Catholic League and the Spanish. Henry IV, a Huguenot convert, came to power in 1589 after a series of political maneuvers and military victories. In an attempt to secure his position and bring peace to the kingdom, he decided to confront the Spanish and Catholic League forces led by the Duke of Parma in the region of Ivry, near Paris. The Battle of Ivry was a turning point in the Wars of Religion, with Henry's forces emerging victorious. The king's leadership and military prowess were on full display as he rallied his troops and personally led the charge against the enemy. The victory allowed Henry to strengthen his grip on the throne and eventually bring about religious peace in France with the Edict of Nantes in 1598. This beautiful and intricately detailed print captures the intensity and drama of the battlefield, with Henry IV at the center, surrounded by his soldiers and the chaos of war. The use of oil on wood adds depth and texture, bringing the scene to life and transporting us back to the 16th century. This historical artwork is a testament to the courage and determination of Henry IV and the pivotal role he played in the history of France.
