EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sir Henry Segrave, a British racing driver and aviator, is seen at the wheel of the Sunbeam Mystery as he breaks the world land speed record at Daytona Beach on March 29, 1927. Segrave, dressed in a leather helmet and goggles, concentrates intently on the road ahead as the Sunbeam Mystery roars along the sandy beach, leaving a trail of dust and debris in its wake. The Sunbeam Mystery was a custom-built racing car designed by the Sunbeam Motor Car Company of Wolverhampton, England, specifically for the purpose of setting a new land speed record. Powered by a supercharged Sunbeam 16-cylinder engine, the car was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. Segrave's record-breaking run took place on a stretch of Daytona Beach in Florida, which at the time was a popular venue for land speed record attempts due to its long, straight, and hard-packed sand surface. With a top speed of 203.792 miles per hour, Segrave not only set a new world record but also became the first person to break the 200 mile per hour barrier on land. This photograph captures a moment of history in the making, as Segrave and the Sunbeam Mystery push the limits of what was thought possible in automotive technology. The image is a testament to the thrill and excitement of early 20th century motorsport and the spirit of innovation that drove it forward.
