EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Voyage Through Time: Historical Marine Specimens from the Endeavour, Investigator, and Beagle Expeditions" 2.. This print showcases a selection of historical marine specimens, each with its unique story and significance in the annals of exploration. From left to right, we find: 3. The first jar houses a vibrant Hawkfish (Cirrhitus spp.), a small, colorful reef fish that was collected during the historic first voyage of the HMS Endeavour, led by Captain James Cook between 1728 and 1730. The Endeavour's groundbreaking journey charted new territories and expanded the known world, paving the way for future explorations. 4. In the second jar, two female Swimming Crabs (Brachyura: Portunidae or Grangidae) are preserved. These crabs were collected during the Investigator expedition, which took place between 1825 and 1828 under the command of Captain Frederick Beechey. The Investigator voyage focused on exploring the Arctic regions, providing valuable insights into the unique marine life of the polar waters. 5. The third and final jar holds an Eleginops maclovinus, also known as the Redlip Gobie, a bony fish belonging to the Eleginopsidae family. This fish was collected during the famous Beagle voyage, led by Captain Robert FitzRoy between 1831 and 1836. The Beagle voyage is most famously known for carrying Charles Darwin, who would go on to develop his groundbreaking theories on evolution and natural selection. 6. The specimens in this print represent a diverse array of marine life, including a hawkfish (Actinopterygii: Cirrhitidae), two crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura), and an Eleginops maclovinus (Actinopterygii: Eleginopsidae). The collection also includes examples of various classes, such as Gadiformes (codfish), Chondrichthyes (elasmobranchs), and Decapoda (crustaceans). These historical specimens offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity discovered during these iconic voyages of exploration.
