EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the rich history of the 2nd/1st West Lancashire Field Ambulance, affectionately known as "The Wurties." The image, taken in June 1918 during World War I, captures the essence of this remarkable unit as they prepared for duty. The 55th Division BEF (British Expeditionary Force) Field Ambulance played a crucial role in providing medical care to the wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Accompanying this photograph are five exquisitely printed menus from The Wurties' Annual Reunion Dinners. Dated between 1949 and 1960, these menus serve as a testament to the camaraderie and tradition that continued long after the war's end. Each menu is adorned with intricate drawings by Private William Harold Hutchings, adding a personal touch to these historic documents. Private Hutchings, born in 1885, was a dedicated member of The Wurties. His artistic talent is evident in the detailed illustrations that grace the reunion dinner menus. Tragically, he passed away in 1962, leaving behind a legacy of service and artistry. These precious artifacts offer a unique glimpse into the history of the 2nd/1st West Lancashire Field Ambulance, showcasing the unit's dedication, resilience, and the enduring bonds formed during wartime.
