HMS Marlborough: A Glimpse into the Past of the British Royal Navy's Iron Duke-class Battleship This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the history of HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this majestic vessel was constructed between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard. As the First World War approached, HMS Marlborough joined the fleet and saw action in various engagements. Post-war, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and played a significant role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, primarily in the Black Sea between 1919 and 1920. The battleship also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. In this photograph, we see the breach end of HMS Marlborough's 13.5-inch turret gun with the breach open. The gun, a formidable weapon during the early 20th century, is a testament to the technological prowess and military might of the British Royal Navy during the 1920s. The Iron Duke-class battleships, including HMS Marlborough, were some of the most advanced warships of their time, embodying the spirit of innovation and power that defined the British naval tradition. This photograph, estimated to have been taken around 1923, offers a fascinating look into the past, providing a glimpse into the history and legacy of HMS Marlborough and the British Royal Navy.
