HMS Marlborough: A Majestic Sight in Dry Dock, Malta, 1923 This striking photograph captures the starboard quarter of HMS Marlborough as it undergoes repairs and overhaul in a Maltese dry dock during the 1920s. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named after the renowned British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard. Commissioned just prior to the First World War, HMS Marlborough served valiantly in the Mediterranean Fleet following the war's end. During this period, the battleship participated in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, we see the ship's imposing starboard side, adorned with its impressive guns, as it rests in the protective confines of the dry dock. The Maltese harbor and base provide a serene backdrop to the bustling activity of the dockyard, where workers can be seen carrying out essential repairs and maintenance. The Marlborough's time in Malta not only served to keep the vessel in fighting shape but also allowed for a brief respite from the rigors of naval service. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the British Royal Navy and the vital role its ships played in maintaining peace and order in the Mediterranean during the tumultuous 1920s.
