Annedouche Edouardtravies Ornithology Steelengraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, titled "Hobby and Falcon," is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and artistry found in the works of Comte de Buffon. The image, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, was published in Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Hobby, or Northern Hobby, is depicted in the foreground, perched on a tree branch with its wings spread wide. The Falcon, specifically a Lanner Falcon, is shown in mid-flight, poised to strike its prey. The Falconet, or Falco biarmicus, is a small falcon species that was sometimes kept as a pet or hunting companion. The intricate details of the birds' feathers, beaks, and eyes are expertly rendered in this engraving, showcasing the skill of the artist and the high-quality production techniques of the time. The background features a serene landscape, with rolling hills and a body of water in the distance. This engraving is an important historical document, as it was part of a larger work that was instrumental in advancing the field of ornithology. Comte de Buffon's Natural History, published between 1748 and 1788, was one of the most comprehensive works on natural history of its time, and greatly influenced the development of the scientific study of animals. The hand-colored steel engraving process was a popular method for producing high-quality illustrations during the 18th and 19th centuries. The process involved creating a steel plate etching, which was then hand-colored by skilled artisans to add depth and vibrancy to the image. This technique allowed for a level of detail and accuracy that was unmatched by other methods of the time, making it an ideal choice for scientific and natural history illustrations.
