EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures John Cam Hobhouse, 1st Baron Broughton (1786-1869), an influential British statesman and author of the 19th century. Hobhouse was born on October 14, 1786, in London, England, into a prominent political family. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before entering Parliament in 1812 as the Member of Parliament for West Looe. Throughout his political career, Hobhouse was known for his liberal views and his support for reform. He served in various government positions, including Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, and was a key figure in the passage of the Reform Act of 1832. Hobhouse also wrote extensively on political and social issues, publishing works such as "A Journal of a Tour on the Continent in 1834-5" and "The Eastern Question." This portrait, painted by Sir Daniel Maclise (1806-1870), captures Hobhouse in the prime of his career. Dressed in the formal attire of a statesman, Hobhouse gazes intently out at the viewer, exuding a sense of confidence and intelligence. The rich colors and intricate details of Maclise's brushstrokes bring Hobhouse to life, making this a truly captivating and historically significant image. John Cam Hobhouse, 1st Baron Broughton, passed away on March 21, 1869, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent statesman and author. This portrait serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to British political history and the enduring impact of his writings.
