EDITORS COMMENTS
Some Honours Men: A Glimpse into the Valor and Heroism of World War I Officers This print, titled "Some Honours Men," is a collection of caricatures of officers who distinguished themselves with military honors during the First World War. The image, created by Lieutenant Fred May, showcases the unique personalities and achievements of these brave men. At the bottom left, we find Captain Brown, who earned his Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1914. Despite being taken prisoner by the Germans, he managed to escape, adding another layer to his remarkable story. In the middle, Lieutenant Frederick William Palmer, V.C., of the Royal Fusiliers, stands out with pride. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration, for his actions near Courcelette in France in February 1917. Palmer took control of his company when all the officers had fallen and, despite facing eight counter-attacks, dislodged an enemy machine gun and maintained a barricaded position while rallying other men. Captain B.A. Saunders, M.C., of the West Yorkshire Regiment, is depicted at the bottom left. Captain W.A. Wolfendle, M.C., of the Kings Own Lancaster Regiment, and Major D.J.R. Richards, D.S.O., M.C., of the Royal Garrison Artillery, are located at the top right and top middle, respectively. Lastly, Lieutenant H. Furniss, MC, of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment, completes this impressive lineup. This evocative print, dated 1918, offers a glimpse into the lives of these honored men, who played significant roles in the history of the First World War. Their stories of valor, courage, and determination continue to inspire us today.
