This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Horse, Equestrian Caballus, and Extinct Quagga, Equus quagga quagga," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the 19th century. The illustration is taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving features two magnificent animals: a horse, Equus ferus caballus, and the extinct quagga, Equus quagga quagga. The horse, a domesticated animal, is depicted in its regal beauty, with its powerful build and flowing mane and tail. In contrast, the quagga, a wild African zebra, is shown with its distinctive stripes, which were much denser on its head and chest, giving it a unique appearance. Sadly, the quagga became extinct in the late 1800s, making this illustration a valuable record of a once-thriving species.
