EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment horses disembark from a ship during the Salonika Campaign of World War One. The image is part of a collection of French official war photographs, dating around 1916, which provide a unique insight into the logistical challenges of transporting and managing large numbers of horses in a military context. The horses, with their coats glistening with sea spray, are led down the ramp of the ship by French soldiers. Their expressions range from calm to anxious, reflecting the uncertainty of the situation. Behind them, the ship's cargo holds can be seen, filled with hay and other supplies for the animals. The Salonika Campaign, also known as the Macedonian Front, was a military effort by the Allies to support Serbia against the Central Powers. Horses played a crucial role in this theater of war, serving as transport for troops and supplies, as well as for artillery and ambulance units. Transporting horses across the sea was a complex and risky undertaking. The animals had to be carefully loaded onto ships, provided with adequate food and water, and acclimated to the new environment. The journey was often long and stressful for the horses, and many did not survive the voyage. Upon arrival, the horses had to be quarantined to prevent the spread of diseases, and then distributed to various units. The process of disembarkation, as shown in this photograph, was a critical step in ensuring the horses were ready for service. This photograph offers a glimpse into the complex and essential role horses played in the Salonika Campaign, and the challenges of managing large numbers of animals in a military context. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by both humans and animals during the war.
