Abraham Boarding Died Lincoln Washington Petersen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the exterior of the historic boarding house at 7th and T Street NW in Washington, D.C., where President Abraham Lincoln spent his final hours on Earth. Known as William Petersen's Boarding House, this modest three-story building holds a significant place in American history. On the fateful night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln attended a performance at Ford's Theatre, just a few blocks away. As they left the theater, John Wilkes Booth fatally shot the President in the back of the head. Desperate to find medical assistance, the Lincolns' secretary, John Hay, and a doctor named Charles Leale carried the mortally wounded President to the nearest house, which happened to be Petersen's Boarding House. The photograph, taken around the turn of the 20th century, shows the unassuming facade of the building, which has since been preserved as a National Historic Site. The room where Lincoln died, now known as the Lincoln Bedroom, has been meticulously restored and is open to the public for tours. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded within its walls, and the enduring legacy of one of America's most beloved and influential presidents. The House where Lincoln died stands as a testament to the nation's history, a symbol of resilience, and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the United States.
