Hot-air balloons, a marvel of the age, were adopted by the military as an innovative means of reconnaissance and strategic advantage on the battlefield. Napoleon's army was among the first to employ these aerial vehicles, using them to keep an observant eye on the enemy lines and lead battles more effectively. The balloons were tethered to the ground with wires, allowing military personnel to communicate with the pilots through messages sent inside sandbags that slid through the wires. The hydrogen gas used for lift was obtained by heating a solution of sulfuric acid and iron filings, releasing hydrogen gas as a byproduct.
