EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving showcases Ignacio Maria de Quintana y Marañón y Larrañaga, 3rd Marquis of Torre Arcas and 11th Count of Paredes, better known as Ignacio María de Marañón y Sotomayor, Marqués de Marañón, or simply Ignacio Maraóaáa del Castillo (1817-1893). Born in Cuba, Marañón was a prominent Spanish military and political figure who rose to prominence during the 3rd Carlist War (1872-1876) in the 19th century. Marañón's military career began in the Spanish Army, where he distinguished himself during the First Carlist War (1833-1840). He later served as the Governor of Cuba (1859-1863) and was appointed as a Senator in the Spanish Cortes (parliament) in 1869. During the 3rd Carlist War, Marañón sided with the liberal forces, leading the defense of Bilbao against the Carlists. His heroic actions earned him the title of 'Hero of Bilbao.' This engraving, created by Badillo, was published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1886. The image captures Marañón in his prime, with a stern expression and a prominent mustache. The rich colors and intricate details bring the portrait to life, making it a striking representation of a man who played a significant role in Spanish politics during the 19th century. Marañón's military and political accomplishments continue to be celebrated in Spanish history, making this engraving a valuable addition to any collection of Spanish or European historical art.
