EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is an exquisite representation of the mythical Hydra from Plate 82 of Albertus Seba's Thesaurus, published in 1758. The Hydra, a legendary beast from Greek mythology, is depicted as a large serpentine creature with multiple heads, believed to number between seven and nine. According to the myth, each time one of the Hydra's heads was severed, two more would grow back in its place. Albertus Seba, a Dutch pharmacist and naturalist, meticulously compiled an extensive collection of naturalia and animalia, which was later published as Thesaurus, a series of 12 volumes showcasing a vast array of plants, animals, and minerals. This illustration of the Hydra is a testament to Seba's dedication to documenting both the known and mythical wonders of the natural world. The Hydra's anatomy, as depicted in this drawing, is reminiscent of various reptile groups, including the Sauropsida, Ophidia, Diapsida, Lepidosauria, and Lepidosaur. These classifications, which were not yet established during Seba's time, describe the Hydra as a scaled reptile with diapsid features, such as a double skull and a backbone with gaps between the vertebrae. Despite its mythical origins, the Hydra has continued to intrigue scholars and naturalists alike, inspiring countless interpretations and adaptations throughout history. This illustration, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, serves as a testament to the enduring fascination with the enigmatic and the unknown.
