EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Independence Monument in the city of Vlore, Albania, erected in 1912 to commemorate the historic proclamation of Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire. The monument, a striking sculpture of a man holding aloft the Albanian flag, stands proudly against the backdrop of the azure Ionian Sea. The twentieth century image transports us back in time to a pivotal moment in Albanian history. The country, which had long been a pawn in the hands of various empires and foreign powers, finally asserted its sovereignty and national identity. The event took place on November 28, 1912, when Ismail Qemali, the Albanian statesman and national hero, read out the Declaration of Independence in Vlore. The monument, a symbol of national pride and resilience, was designed by the Italian sculptor Ermenegildo Luigi D'Angelo. It was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of the proclamation of independence, in 1922. The statue, which stands at a height of 11 meters, is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Albanian people and their determination to forge their own path in the European continent. The photograph, taken in the early years of the twentieth century, offers a glimpse into the past and serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Albania. The image, with its timeless beauty and historical significance, continues to resonate with both Albanians and visitors to the country, inspiring a sense of awe and admiration for the courage and determination of those who fought for their nation's independence.
