Born in Bordeaux, Laffitte began his career as a merchant before turning to finance, quickly amassing a fortune through shrewd business deals and investments. Laffitte's political career began in earnest in the early 19th century, when he became a leading figure in the liberal opposition to the Bourbon monarchy. He was a vocal advocate for economic modernization and financial reform, and played a key role in the overthrow of the Bourbons in the July Revolution of 1830. As Ministre des Finances, Laffitte implemented a series of bold reforms aimed at stabilizing the French economy and reducing the national debt. He introduced a new tax on property, abolished various privileges and monopolies, and restructured the national debt. These measures were controversial and met with resistance from various interest groups, but they ultimately helped to lay the foundation for the economic growth and prosperity of the Second French Empire. Despite his many accomplishments, Laffitte's tenure as Ministre des Finances was short-lived. He was forced to resign in 1832 due to political infighting and opposition from the king.
