EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature portrait depicts James I of England and I of Scotland, also known as Jaques I, in regal attire from the period of his reign from 1603 to 1625. Born on June 19, 1566, in Edinburgh, Scotland, James was the only surviving son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Henry, Lord Darnley. After his mother's execution in 1567, James was raised in Scotland under the guardianship of various regents until he assumed the throne of Scotland in 1567 at the age of thirteen. In 1603, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England, James acceded to the English throne as well, becoming the first monarch to rule both England and Scotland. This union of the English and Scottish crowns marked the beginning of the House of Stuart's reign in England, which would last until 1714. James I was a scholar, patron of the arts, and a proponent of the divine right of kings. He believed that he was appointed by God to rule and was therefore above the law. James's reign was marked by a series of conflicts, including the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the Bishops' Wars in Scotland. Despite these challenges, James is remembered for his efforts to promote peace and stability in his realms. This miniature portrait, created around 1625, captures James I in the prime of his reign, with a serious yet composed expression. He is depicted wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, one of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in the British Isles. The intricate details of the portrait, from the delicate folds of his clothing to the subtle shading of his face, showcase the skill of the miniature painter. This portrait provides a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential monarch, whose reign marked a significant turning point in the history of England and Scotland.
