1863 Admiral Andover Bonnet Coke Depicted Digby Howard Jane Striking Vctss Viscount Viscountess Elizabeth
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, Jane Elizabeth Coke, later known as Viscountess Andover, is depicted in an elegant and striking bonnet from the year 1863. At the time of this photograph, Jane was the wife of both Charles Howard, Viscount Howard of Effingham and Charles Howard, Viscount Andover. Her first marriage was to Charles Howard, the eldest son and heir of the 13th Earl of Suffolk, with whom she had three children: Henry Charles Howard, Elizabeth Mary Howard, and Geraldine Agnes Howard. However, tragedy struck when Charles Howard passed away in 1860, leaving Jane a widow at a relatively young age. Just three years later, in 1863, Jane married Admiral Sir Henry Digby, who was also a widower and had two children of his own. This second marriage brought Jane into the Digby family, becoming the stepmother of their children, Henry Digby Digby and Constance Digby. Jane Elizabeth Coke, born on July 2, 1837, was the eldest daughter of Thomas Coke, 2nd Earl of Leicester and Lady Elizabeth Sackville. Her striking appearance in this photograph, with her elegant bonnet adorned with a delicate veil and intricate lace, showcases the fashionable trends of the mid-19th century. The image also highlights the societal norms of the time, where women of high status were expected to marry into influential families and maintain a graceful and elegant demeanor. Despite the challenges she faced, including the loss of her first husband and the societal expectations of her time, Jane Elizabeth Coke, as Viscountess Andover, continued to gracefully navigate the complexities of Victorian society. This portrait is a testament to her resilience and the elegance of the era in which she lived.
