EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back in time to the early 1910s in Atami, Japan, where a light railway line once thrived. The image showcases a small, yet mighty steam locomotive ascending a hillside, its plume of smoke billowing into the crisp morning air. The narrow-gauge railway, measuring just 762 mm or 2ft 6in, was a vital mode of transportation during this era, connecting various towns and villages in the region. The serene atmosphere of the scene is contrasted by the industrious nature of the railway, with the rust-colored tracks stretching out before us, leading deeper into the landscape. The locomotive, with its intricate details and powerful presence, stands as a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. Unfortunately, the golden age of this light railway came to an abrupt end in 1923, when the devastating Great Kanto earthquake struck Japan. The earthquake and the subsequent fires destroyed much of the infrastructure, including the railway lines, bringing an end to the era of steam-powered transportation in Atami. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of the rich history of Japan's transportation system and the role that light railways played in connecting communities and shaping the country's landscape. This image serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, inviting us to reflect on the past and appreciate the advancements that have come since.
