EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1906, captures the essence of cultural exchange and adaptation as it depicts nine Japanese women living in the Tonkin Region of North Vietnam. The Tonkin Region, also known as Tongkin or Tonquin, was a French protectorate in northern Vietnam, and this image offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Japanese women who had made their home there. The women are dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos, the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of their garments standing out against the lush, green backdrop of their Vietnamese surroundings. Each woman's kimono is unique, reflecting the individuality of its wearer, yet they all share the distinctive elements of this formal attire - wide sleeves, a sash (obi) tied at the waist, and a long, flowing skirt (kasane). Despite being in a foreign land, these women have not forsaken their traditional Japanese hairstyles. Their intricately styled wigs, known as 'shimada,' are adorned with accessories such as combs, flowers, and ornaments, adding to their regal appearance. Some of the women wear their hair in the elaborate 'shikake-musubi' style, characterized by a high bun at the crown of the head, while others have their hair styled in more simple, yet elegant, braids. The presence of these Japanese women in Vietnam raises intriguing questions about their reasons for living there. Were they part of a diplomatic or trade mission? Had they married Vietnamese or Japanese men who were working or living in the region? Or perhaps they had simply chosen to make Vietnam their home for personal reasons? Regardless of their backgrounds, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural history that exists when different communities come together and share their traditions.
