1668 1733 Aime Bishop Blois Caumartin Francois Lefevre Aimable

EDITORS COMMENTS
Jean François Paul Lefevre de Caumartin (1668-1733), affectionately known as Bishop Caumartin, was a prominent French prelate and bishop of Blois during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Paris, Caumartin began his ecclesiastical career as a canon of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris before being appointed bishop of Blois in 1697. Caumartin was known for his kindness and affability, earning him the nickname "aimable autant qu il est aime," which translates to "as lovable as he is loved." He was a popular figure in the diocese of Blois and was respected by both the clergy and the laity. During his tenure as bishop, Caumartin focused on pastoral care and the improvement of the diocese's infrastructure. He oversaw the construction of new churches and the renovation of existing ones, as well as the establishment of schools and charities. He also worked to strengthen the moral and spiritual life of the clergy, implementing stricter regulations and encouraging regular confession and communion. Despite his dedication to his duties as bishop, Caumartin remained humble and approachable. He was known to visit the sick and the poor in their homes, and he was always willing to listen to the concerns of his flock. His kindness and compassion earned him the loyalty and admiration of the people of Blois, who remembered him fondly long after his death in 1733. This portrait of Bishop Caumartin, dated 1668-1733, captures the bishop's warm and approachable demeanor. With his kind eyes and gentle expression, he seems to embody the qualities that made him so beloved by the people of Blois. The portrait serves as a reminder of the important role that compassionate and dedicated religious leaders can play in the lives of their communities.
