EDITORS COMMENTS
Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry: From Paris Shopgirl to Mistress of Louis XV This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry, a Parisian shopgirl who rose to become the favored mistress of King Louis XV in the mid-18th century. The painting, believed to be by the renowned artist François Lemoyne or Jean-Baptiste Greuze, depicts Jeanne in the prime of her beauty, with an air of confidence and allure. Born in Paris around 1743, Jeanne Becu began her career as a seamstress in a fashionable shop. Her striking looks and charisma soon caught the attention of the Marquise du Barry, the king's current favorite, who took Jeanne under her wing and introduced her to the royal court. In 1768, Jeanne became the king's official mistress, living in the Palace of Versailles and enjoying the lavish lifestyle of the French aristocracy. However, Jeanne's reign as the queen of the court was short-lived. With the onset of the French Revolution in 1789, the monarchy and its supporters were targeted for retribution. In 1793, Jeanne was arrested and put on trial for her role in the excesses of the royal court. Despite her attempts to flee, she was captured and brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal. On January 17, 1793, Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry, was guillotined in the Place de la Révolution, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in French history. This portrait of Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry, serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous events that shaped the late 18th century in France. The image invites us to reflect on the fleeting nature of power and the human capacity for transformation, from humble beginnings to the heights of royal favor and ultimately, to the guillotine.
