Jeanne de St. Rémy de Valois, Comtesse de La Motte: The Mastermind Behind the Diamond Necklace Affair This portrait depicts Jeanne de St. Rémy de Valois, Comtesse de La Motte, a French adventuress who made headlines in the late 18th century with her involvement in the infamous Diamond Necklace Affair. Born in 1756, Jeanne was a woman of charm and wit, who used her allure to manipulate the powerful figures of the French court. The Diamond Necklace Affair began in 1785 when Jeanne, posing as the Duke of Orléans' mistress, convinced Marie Antoinette to purchase an expensive diamond necklace as a gift for the duke. Marie Antoinette, who was already under financial strain, agreed to the purchase, but the necklace was never delivered. Instead, Jeanne and her accomplices sold the necklace to an unsuspecting buyer, the Chevalier de La Vrillière, who believed he was purchasing it for the Duke of Orléans. When the truth came to light, Marie Antoinette was publicly humiliated, and the affair caused a significant rift between her and the French people. Jeanne was eventually arrested and put on trial, but her charm and cunning allowed her to avoid a guilty verdict. She was eventually exiled from France in 1791. This portrait of Jeanne de St. Rémy de Valois, Comtesse de La Motte, captures the enigmatic and alluring quality that made her such a fascinating figure in French history. Despite her involvement in a scandal that tarnished the reputation of the French monarchy, she remains a symbol of the intrigue and scandal that defined the French court in the late 18th century.
