1756 1791 Comtesse Countess French Woman Intriguing Jeanne Motte Lamotte

EDITORS COMMENTS
Jeanne de Luz Radamy d'Isle, Comtesse de Lamotte (1756-1791): An Intriguing Frenchwoman of the Ancien Régime This portrait captures Jeanne de Luz Radamy d'Isle, Comtesse de Lamotte, a woman of great intrigue and mystery during the Ancien Régime in France. Born in 1756, Jeanne was the daughter of a wealthy and influential family from the region of Languedoc. Her beauty and intelligence quickly gained her the attention of the French aristocracy, and she became a sought-after figure at the royal court. Despite her privileged upbringing, Jeanne's life was far from conventional. She was known for her unconventional behavior and her love of adventure. She reportedly had numerous romantic liaisons with powerful men, including the Duke of Orléans and the Marquis de Sade. Her scandalous reputation only added to her allure, and she became a subject of fascination for the French nobility. However, Jeanne's life took a dark turn during the French Revolution. In 1791, she was arrested and imprisoned in the infamous Conciergerie prison in Paris. The reasons for her arrest are unclear, but it is believed that she may have been accused of being a counter-revolutionary or of harboring royalist sympathies. Despite her connections and her wealth, Jeanne was ultimately sent to the guillotine on October 1, 1791. This portrait, taken around 1785, captures Jeanne at the height of her fame and her notoriety. Her striking features, elegant attire, and confident gaze all contribute to her enigmatic allure. Despite her tragic end, Jeanne de Luz Radamy d'Isle, Comtesse de Lamotte remains an intriguing and fascinating figure in French history.
