EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving showcases a stunning assembly of jellyfish species, with the Mauve Stinger (Pelagia noctiluca) taking center stage. The Mauve Stinger, also known as the Common Jellyfish or the Blue Blubber Jelly, is a well-known pelagic jellyfish, famous for its vibrant, mauve coloration and bioluminescent properties. Surrounding the Mauve Stinger are several other intriguing jellyfish species. The Berenice Rouge (Berenice gypsina), with its red coloration and delicate, feathery tentacles, is depicted to the left. The Root-arm Medusa (Cladonema elegans) is shown on the right, characterized by its long, trailing tentacles that resemble roots. In the foreground, a Root-arm jellyfish (Beroe cucumis) is depicted, its transparent body revealing the root-like structures that give it its name. Another specimen, the Red Coral Jellyfish (Rhizostoma octopus), can be seen in the upper left corner, with its distinctive red color and bell-shaped body. This beautiful engraving is an exquisite example from Charles Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in 1849. The meticulous handcoloring brings these enchanting marine creatures to life, providing a glimpse into the rich diversity of the zoological world during the 19th century.
