Born on March 2, 1814, John Henry Thomas Manners-Sutton was the eldest son of the second Viscount Canterbury. He began his political career in 1837 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tregony. Over the next few decades, he held various positions in the British government, including Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and Governor of New South Wales.
