Joseph's Election as Mary's Husband: A Scene from the Codex of Predis (1476), Royal Library, Turin, Italy This exquisite illuminated manuscript page, hailing from the fifteenth century, depicts a significant moment in the Christian narrative as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew: the election of Joseph as the husband of the Virgin Mary. The scene unfolds in a grand manner, with the elderly Saints Anne and Joachim, Mary's parents, seated on either side of the presiding figure, Saint Matthew, who holds a scroll inscribed with the words "Ecee virginem tuan, quam duxit vir virginum" (Behold the virgin whom the man took, who is greater than all men). The newly chosen Joseph, humbly bowing before the assembled saints, is shown in the center, receiving the blessing of Saint Matthew. The Codex of Predis, also known as the Predis Hours, is a beautiful example of the rich artistic heritage of the Italian Renaissance. The manuscript was created around 1476, during the height of the mediaeval age, and is attributed to the workshop of Cristoforo di Gerolamo, also known as Cristoforo Predis. The Codex of Predis is renowned for its exceptional illuminations, which showcase the mastery of the artist in capturing the human form, the delicate interplay of light and shadow, and the vibrant use of color. This scene of Joseph's election is a testament to the profound reverence and devotion that the Catholic Church held towards the lives of the holy figures of the Christian faith during the fifteenth century. The Codex of Predis remains an invaluable historical and artistic treasure, providing a glimpse into the religious beliefs and artistic sensibilities of the time.
