Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1777, Hume's political career began in earnest in the late 1810s when he became involved in local politics in Edinburgh. Hume's radical views on reform and democracy set him apart from his contemporaries. He was a vocal critic of the Corn Laws, which protected the interests of landowners at the expense of the working class. Hume believed in free trade and the repeal of protectionist measures, arguing that they only served to enrich the wealthy at the expense of the poor. Hume's political activism extended beyond economic issues. He was a staunch advocate for civil liberties, women's suffrage, and religious tolerance.
