1763 1814 Beauharnais Empress Josephe Josephine Marie Napoleon Necklace Ribault Tascher

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de Beauharnais, better known as Empress Joséphine of France, adorned in regal splendor. Born in Martinique in 1763, Joséphine was the daughter of a French plantation owner and his Creole wife. She married Alexandre de Beauharnais in 1779, and their union brought them to Parisian high society. In 1804, Joséphine became the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, the newly crowned Emperor of the French. This portrait, taken during her reign as Empress, showcases her elegance and refinement. The intricately designed crown, adorned with pearls, diamonds, and gold, sits atop her curly brown locks, while a magnificent necklace of pearls and diamonds drapes around her neck. Josèphe's fashion sense was renowned, and she was known for her love of jewelry, fashion, and haute couture. This portrait, captured by an unknown artist, is a testament to her regal status and the opulence of the Napoleonic court. Josèphe's reign as Empress was marked by her patronage of the arts, her support of Napoleon's military campaigns, and her efforts to promote peace and stability in Europe. However, their marriage was childless, and in 1810, Napoleon divorced Joséphine to marry Marie-Louise of Austria. Joséphine was exiled to the Château de Malmaison, where she lived until her death in 1814. This portrait, with its intricate details and regal elegance, offers a glimpse into the life of one of the most fascinating women of the Napoleonic era. It serves as a reminder of Joséphine's enduring legacy as a powerful and influential figure in French history.
