1795 1820 Born Died Sept

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the likeness of Joseph Rodman Drake (1795-1820), an American poet whose tragic life was cut short at the young age of 25. Born on August 7, 1795, in Baltimore, Maryland, Drake showed an early aptitude for literature and poetry. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and later at Harvard University. Drake's poetry was marked by its depth of feeling and its exploration of the human condition. His most famous work, "The Letter of the Beloved," was published posthumously in 1824 and quickly gained widespread acclaim. The poem tells the story of a lover's longing for his absent beloved and is considered a classic of American Romantic literature. Despite his literary success, Drake's life was marred by personal tragedy. He suffered from poor health throughout his life, and his wife, Sarah Tucker Drake, died in childbirth just days after giving birth to their only child in 1820. Drake himself passed away on September 20, 1820, leaving behind a legacy of just a few published poems and a deep sense of loss. This portrait of Drake, created between 1820 and 1841, captures the intensity and sensitivity of the young poet. The bust portrait, with Drake facing front and framed in a medallion, is a poignant reminder of the brief but brilliant literary career of this American Romantic poet.
