EDITORS COMMENTS
The Khyber Pass, Bermuda: A Narrow and Steep Historical Pathway Leading to the South Shore Beaches of Astwood Cove Nestled in the heart of Warwick, Bermuda, lies a quaint and seemingly innocuous pathway known as the Khyber Pass. This narrow and steep-sided road, which winds its way up from the coastal area near Astwood Cove, belies the rich historical significance that lies within its walls. Although the name "Khyber Pass" may evoke images of the famous mountain pass in Afghanistan, this Bermudan version has its own unique story to tell. Contrary to popular belief, the name does not stem from the British Indian Army's experiences in the First Afghan War of 1841, during which the regiment suffered heavy casualties. Instead, it is believed to have been named after the Khyber Pass in Pakistan, due to the similarity in name and the challenging terrain. The passageway has been a vital part of Bermudan history for over a century. In the early 1900s, the Khyber Pass was the primary route for transporting goods and supplies from the southern part of the island to the northern areas. Donkey carts laden with produce and other essentials navigated the winding, steep paths, making their way up from the shoreline to the villages above. Today, the Khyber Pass remains an intriguing piece of Bermudan heritage. As visitors make their way up the narrow, steep-sided road, they can almost hear the clatter of donkey hooves and the calls of the merchants and traders who once made their living along this historic passageway. The Khyber Pass stands as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Bermudan people, who have carved out a living from the challenging terrain and transformed it into a cherished piece of their cultural heritage.
