EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfonso V of Aragon, also known as Alfonso the Magnanimous, is depicted in this beautiful 19th century engraving, riding proudly on horseback. Born in 1396, Alfonso was the last king of the House of Trastamara in the Kingdom of Aragon and the first king of the Kingdoms of Aragon and Naples. This image showcases Alfonso's regal presence and his impeccable military attire, which includes a suit of armor adorned with intricate designs. Alfonso earned his nickname, "The Magnanimous," for his generosity, courage, and magnanimity. He was a skilled military leader who expanded the territories of the Crown of Aragon through various conquests, including the conquest of Naples in 1442. Alfonso was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and during his reign, the courts of Aragon and Naples became centers of cultural and intellectual activity. The engraving captures Alfonso's strong and determined character, as he gazes confidently into the distance, holding the reins of his horse with one hand and brandishing a scepter in the other. The horse, too, appears alert and powerful, reflecting the strength and might of the king and his kingdom. This engraving, which is part of the "Illustrated History of Spain" series, was produced in the 19th century and is colored, adding to its vibrant and striking appearance. The image is a testament to Alfonso V's enduring legacy as a powerful and magnanimous monarch in the history of Aragon and Naples.
