EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment during the final months of the First World War, as King George V (1865-1936) personally presents the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor, to Lieutenant Cecil Knox (1894-1918). The image, taken in 1918, portrays the British monarch in his full regal attire, adorned with the Star of India and the Order of the Bath, as he warmly congratulates the young officer. Knox, dressed in his military uniform, stands proudly at attention, a proud smile gracing his face as he receives the prestigious medal. The First World War (1914-1918) was a defining period in world history, and this photograph encapsulates the bravery, courage, and determination of the men and women who served in the British Army. The Victoria Cross, established in 1856, is the most prestigious military decoration in the British honors system, awarded for acts of valour in the face of the enemy. Cecil Knox was a Canadian soldier, serving with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of Arras, on April 23, 1918. Knox led his men in an attack on the German lines, despite being severely wounded, and continued to rally his troops until he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions saved the lives of many of his men and turned the tide of the battle. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served in the armed forces during the Great War, and the bravery and courage that defined their actions.
