EDITORS COMMENTS
King Louis XII of France (1462-1515) Departs from Alessandria for the Conquest of Genoa, 24th April 1507 This striking image captures the moment when King Louis XII of France (1462-1515) sets out from the city of Alessandria, Italy, on his campaign to conquer Genoa. Dressed in full armor and mounted on a powerful horse, the king leads his troops through the bustling streets of Alessandria, ready to embark on the military expedition that would secure his claim to the Italian peninsula. Louis XII, who had ascended to the French throne just two years earlier, had long coveted the Genoese trade routes and the strategic position of Genoa in the Mediterranean. The city, a wealthy and powerful maritime republic, had refused to recognize Louis' claim to the title of King of Italy, and the king saw an opportunity to assert his dominance in the region. The scene depicted in this print is filled with the sights and sounds of military preparation. Soldiers and horses mill about, while banners and pennants flutter in the wind. The king's standard-bearer holds aloft the royal banner, while trumpeters sound the call to arms. The people of Alessandria line the streets to bid their ruler farewell, their faces a mix of pride, excitement, and apprehension. As the king and his army ride out of the city, they are met with the prospect of a long and arduous campaign. The road to Genoa would be fraught with challenges, from the rugged terrain of the Ligurian Alps to the formidable defenses of the Genoese fortresses. But Louis XII was a seasoned military commander, and he was determined to succeed. With God on his side and a strong army at his back, he set out to claim his rightful place as the ruler of Italy.
