Yugoslavia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures King Peter II of Yugoslavia, exiled and in exile during World War II, meeting with American President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Oval Office of the White House on October 24, 1943. The young monarch, who had been forced to flee his country after the Axis powers invaded Yugoslavia in 1941, was in the United States to seek military and diplomatic support for the Allied cause and to rally international opinion against the fascist regime of his homeland. Dressed in a formal suit and wearing the Order of the Star of Karađorđe, the highest decoration of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, King Peter appears determined and resolute as he discusses the situation in his country with the American leader. Roosevelt, in turn, listens intently, his expression serious and thoughtful. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role that the Allied powers played in the liberation of Yugoslavia from the grip of the Axis powers, and of the critical diplomatic and military support that was provided to the exiled monarch during the darkest days of the war. The photograph also speaks to the complex and often fraught relationship between the United States and Europe during World War II, as well as the enduring importance of diplomacy and international cooperation in times of crisis. With the backdrop of the war, the meeting between King Peter and Roosevelt represents a powerful symbol of hope and unity in the face of adversity, and a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and alliance between the United States and Europe.
