Kitchener as war minister: one of his last public acts, 1916

Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl of Khartoum and Broome (1850-1916), going to face his critics as war minister: leaving the war office on 2nd June 1916, for his meeting with (about two hundred) Menbers of Parliament desirous of information it was not in the public interest to discuss publicly in the House of Commons. Within a few hours of the unprecedented gathering, he had left London, with his personal staff, and was on his way to take ship for Russia on board the cruiser Hampshire. General Sir William Robertson (1860-1933) walking behind.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, taken on June 2, 1916, Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl of Khartoum and Broome, makes his way out of the War Office in London, marking one of his last public acts as the British War Minister. Amidst growing criticism over the conduct of the war effort during World War I, Kitchener had called for a meeting with approximately two hundred Members of Parliament, away from the public gaze of the House of Commons. The unprecedented gathering was held to discuss sensitive information that it was deemed not in the public interest to disclose. Within hours of the meeting, Kitchener had bid farewell to London, accompanied by his personal staff, and was en route to Russia, where he intended to assess the military situation firsthand. Walking behind Kitchener in this image is General Sir William Robertson, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Robertson's presence underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency of Kitchener's departure. Dressed in their military uniforms, both men cut a somber figure as they navigated the bustling streets of London, leaving behind the familiar confines of the War Office and embarking on a journey that would ultimately prove to be their last. The photograph captures a moment of uncertainty and anticipation, as the two British leaders faced the challenges of the war and the expectations of their critics. The image stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to their country and their determination to serve in the face of adversity. This evocative photograph is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the sacrifices made by those in positions of power during the First World War. It is a powerful visual representation of the complexities and challenges faced by political and military leaders during a time of global conflict.
