This photograph captures Ettie, Lady Desborough (née Ethel Mary Bateman), in an enchanting moment at a masque she and her husband, Lord Desborough, hosted at their elegant country estate, Taplow Court, in January 1912. Lady Desborough is resplendent in her intricately designed costume, while her second son, Gerald Grenfell, affectionately known as 'Billy,' dons the regal attire of a Roman centurion. The masque, an aristocratic tradition that combined elements of theatre, music, and dance, provided an opportunity for the Grenfells and their esteemed guests to momentarily escape the realities of their daily lives and indulge in the fantastical and fanciful. Billy Grenfell, who was 20 years old at the time of this photograph, would unfortunately not live to see many more masques or celebrations. Tragically, he was killed in action on 30 July 1915, only a few months after his elder brother, Julian, had succumbed to wounds sustained in the same conflict. The Grenfell family's heartache was shared by the nation, as the brothers' tragic deaths were widely reported in the press and deeply felt by the British public. This poignant image serves as a poignant reminder of the joy and innocence that was lost during the First World War, as well as the inescapable reality of its devastating consequences.
